Vendor Spotlight – Melody Withers Photography

Tell us about Melody Withers Photography.

I am a photographer in the Muncie/Anderson area that travels throughout central Indiana to shoot weddings. I have been shooting weddings for about 8 years. I have shot over 100 weddings. Before that, I graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Photojournalism and Advertising.

Who is Melody Withers Photography?

I am a mother of two amazing boys and a have been married 17 years. Between my family and my business, I keep pretty busy. According to my kids, my favorite things are taking photos, coffee, sushi, and naps. I would say that’s pretty accurate.

How did you decide to go into wedding photography?

I fell in love with photography in college but I always had enjoyed taking photos. I originally did not want to do wedding photography. The entire idea scared me. However, my first bride came to me and convinced me to shoot her wedding. I fell in love with it. I loved the moments throughout the day. I did not have a wedding photographer at my wedding and that’s the only thing I regret. Because of this, I have a strong to desire to give couples amazing photography of their wedding day and to capture those fleeting moments that might be forgotten.

What advice do you have for couples planning a wedding?

I would say to first take a deep breath. LOL. Then I would say to try to be as organized as possible. I have clients that will have a binder and keep everything in one place. The first thing you have to decide before anything is your budget. Then after that you need to figure out your prioritized list. Do you prioritize your venue or your wedding date? Personally, I think photography should be high on the priority list. LOL. Then you go from there.

Do you have any tips on how to save money on weddings?

If you want to save some money on wedding days:

  1. Choose off-season wedding dates or get married on a Friday or Sunday. Some vendors give discounts for less popular dates.
  2. Decide what you can do on your own and what you need to hire someone to do. You can save money doing things on your own but sometimes you trade that with extra stress.
  3. Go non-traditional. You can save a lot of money getting creative. Don’t get me wrong I love shooting traditional weddings but I also love shooting non-traditional weddings.
  4. Buy decorations used. There are several Facebook groups where people sell their used centerpieces and decorations.
  5. Go to Bridal shows. A lot of vendors have discounts for coming to the bridal show. But come to the show prepared. Know what vendors you are still looking for and what vendors you want to talk to. Most shows will post their vendor list prior to the event so you can research them before you meet them.

How can brides save money with Melody Withers Photography?

I have several ways for brides to save money when booking me. I have the try before you buy option that allows brides to purchase an engagement session to see how I work, my personality when shooting, and the results they get. Then once they book their wedding with me, what they have paid for the session goes toward their deposit for their wedding. This allows them to feel confident in choosing me as their photographer and they essentially get a free engagement session because it isn’t added on the total cost of the package.

Another way to save money with Melody Withers Photography, is my new create your own package. With this you can choose between 6 hours, 8 hours or all day coverage then decide if you want a book or any other add-ons or not. My base package also only has one photographer. I’ve shot over 100 weddings and I have only shot 2 with a second photographer. This helps me to give lower prices to brides. With shooting as many weddings as I have, I have plenty of experience shooting by myself and capturing all the major moments.

Why did you start this blog?

I wanted to create a place for people to go to help them plan a wedding. I hope to be able to interview vendors, current brides, past brides and get their experiences and tips.

Anything you are excited about for the upcoming season?

Yes. I’m super excited to start offering create your own wedding packages. It is an amazing way for brides to afford beautiful photography. I’m also excited to be shooting at some new venues and shooting at some of my favorite venues.
